The Arc Lounge Chair was created for the GIA 2025 Student Design Competition, which featured multiple categories, with this entry focusing on ready-to-assemble furniture.

Exploration of an oversized chair with an adjustable back rest.
Concerns over transportability and ease of assembly led to further exploration.
Exploration of a swinging chair concept suspended from a steel tube frame that would move freely and adapt to the users adjustment in posture.
The swinging chair concept adapted nicely to the users natural shift in seating positions, but ultimately had concerns over stability and safety after user testing.
Features from previous concepts were integrated into a rocking chair, offering synchronized movement and stability. With a steel frame, leather sling seat, and soft cushion, the design balances quality, portability, adaptability, and visual appeal.
Two pieces were CNC-cut from ¾” plywood and secured with 2x4s to test the rocking motion. User testing revealed a preference for a pivot point over a rocking motion.

The final prototype features a pivot point, sling seat, and cylindrical cushion, along with a shallow cut that mimics the chair’s profile as if constructed from rectangular tubing.
